What is Periodontology?

Periodontologyis the study of the assembly and supporting structure of teeth and the various diseases and ailments they may face. The supporting structure of a tooth includes various tissues, including: the gums, cementum, periodontal ligamentand thealveolar bone. The medical professionals who partake in this field of study are commonly referred to as periodontists.

What do Periodontists do?

Unlike anorthodontist or an endodontist, a periodontist will not focus upon the structural integrity of the actual tooth. A periodontist will study the overall structure of the tooth, focusing mainly upon the supporting areas and tissues. They often are specialists in mouth disease which aren’t directly related to the tooth, such as gum disease.

Why do I need a Periodontist?

Oral health is as equally important as the health of any other area of the body, and in some case more important. The majority of people dismiss oral health concerns outside of direct dentistry as they think the maintenance of teeth covers the health care of the mouth. This is often not the case and without proper care oral disease of the mouth can occur. Gum diseaseand many other types of irritations thrive in people who have untreated/poor oral health. The diseases can lead to the structural integrity of a tooth becoming compromised.
